About Mama

A warm, heartfelt welcome!

Mama’s content to lead a fairly quiet country life with my husband of 40+ years in my beautiful northeastern home state after residing in the Southwest, Midwest, and Pacific Northwest.

After short stints as an English teacher, newspaper reporter/editor, and technical editor, I traded in my working girl hat for my most important career – stay at home mother to three children, who have since grown up and flown the nest.

I first started blogging when I was recuperating from cancer surgery several years ago, but as life and the busy world of a part-time job, children in high school and college, and spending time with my last living parent resumed, I just stopped writing.   As my nest emptied out though, expressing my thoughts and insights in words became my refuge and this blog, Mama’s Empty Nest, breathed life.

Just muddling through.

While I muddle through this stage of life with its changes and emotions,  my hope is to encourage my readers through my experiences. Even though my nest is empty, I find my heart is full.

A lover of words since I was a child,  I keep an old notebook chock full of quotes which I use along with God’s Word, my guidebook for life, for writing inspiration. Saved by grace, my faith in Jesus Christ sustains me and my favorite passage is “Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” ~ Thessalonians 5:16-18.

And here I am now.

Since leaving a 13-year-long ministry as an Education Director for a non-profit a number of years ago, I spent a season of time substitute teaching at a private academy.  But now I am enjoying retirement and absolutely love spending time with my way too adorable grandchildren.

More often than not you can find me tapping away on my desktop computer writing words that seem to pour out of my soul or wandering around the countryside with my camera held up to my eye.

I’m just an amateur photographer but I absolutely love being behind my camera lens capturing whatever appeals to me. I do strive to use my own photographs to accompany my writing and my hope is that you enjoy my pictures as much as I do.

Thank you for stopping by!

I try to post at least two times a week. Please join me each week by clicking on the Don’t Miss A Thing subscribe button on the right side of my home page.  I hope you come back again soon!

Mama’s Empty Nest is always open for new friends and old!

  1. Hello, I found your blog whilst looking for information on the artist Gebre Kristos in the US. Would you consider sharing the article you wrote about him, or the name of the newspaper that you published it in? He was a remarkable artist and your reminisces of him, a year before his death, were very moving.

    1. Kate, I apologize for the late response to your comments. For some reason, they were relegated to spam and while clearing that out today, I found them. I’m not certain my article on Kristos would be too helpful since I can’t recall much of what I wrote so long ago. But I do have the article packed away somewhere and if I find it, I certainly would be willing to share it with you. Please send me your email address for that purpose. I doubt if you will find the article online since the newspaper I worked for at the time (The Lawton Constitution in Lawton, Oklahoma) only has digital archives up to 1977 and my article was written after that time. I do recall how very gentle and kind-hearted Kristos was and so very grateful to have been able to immigrate to the United States. Good luck in your research and best regards to you.

      1. Hello! I’m so sorry – I’m only seeing your response to my comment now! I did not get a notification for it. Please do email me (kc90@st-andrews.ac.uk) – I would love to hear from you! I have been able to access the Lawton Constitution via the Library of Congress, so if you have any memories of the date or even the month of the article, I can look it up. Thank you!

    1. Savor each moment with your two energetic boys and file each of those memories away in your mind because when they are grown, those remembered moments will bring you joy. Thank you for reading about my journey, Madame Zenista. I appreciate hearing from you. Be blessed.

      1. Believe me when I say, ‘Been there, done that!’ I even have the gray hair to prove it. 😉 There were days when my three were little that I thought I’d lose my mind, but now I look back at those times and laugh. It comes too quickly, which is why I encourage all younger moms to hang in there and try to capture each moment, even the crazy ones!

  2. I’m glad to have stumbled across your blog. It’s obvious from your writing that you were an English teacher! I too enjoy amateur photography. I think that’s a great idea to use your own photos for your blog. I do that a lot too.

  4. What a relief to discover that I am not going crazy and there are other ’empty nesters’ out there, struggling and muddling through this phase of life. There are so many ‘super’ women I know, who appear to sail through every trial of life with such poise and grace, that a ‘muddler’ like me, an ordinary woman sometimes overwhelmed by the tough stuff, cannot relate and rarely finds kinship in this situation. Today I know that apart from anything else, in this particular struggle, I am not alone! Thank you.

    1. Ashling Hope, you are definitely NOT alone! I believe those ‘super’ women struggle too; they just don’t show it. Only when we are truly transparent can we help others, who are experiencing the same trials of life that we are, manage their way through it. For those of us ‘ordinary women’ who poured heart and soul into mothering our children, the empty nest really smacks us and knocks us for a loop! I’m so glad you commented today. I’ve been on this journey for quite awhile and I’m still traveling. I hope I can encourage you along your way. Thank you for stopping by; I’m on my way to check out your blog too. 🙂

  5. Mama’s (I’m refraining from using your real name in case that is only for off-blog communication) — your photo posts lately have been so beautiful! Your sentiments at the end of the water one, about your daughter, rang home for me in so many ways. My heart goes out to you and your family that you may indeed reach those carefree days yet again! I would have left this comment on the post directly — but I can’t find a comment form. Have you disabled them?

    1. Thanks for alerting me. I don’t know if it’s a WordPress glitch or what because I have not disabled comments and my dashboard shows that comments are not disabled. Weird, huh? I wondered why I didn’t get any feedback! Anyway, thank you for the sweet compliment. You are such an encouraging friend. My daughter is having hip surgery soon since all other treatments have been exhausted and my mama’s heart is troubled. I know you know exactly how I feel.

      2. Thank you, Melissa! I took that empty nest photo last summer on our vacation to North Carolina. We stayed in a charming and beautiful one-bedroom house that was named Sparrow Cottage. There were bird and empty nest decorations all through it. Seemed so perfect just for me and hubby, the empty nesters. 🙂

  7. I see I haven’t been here since February–good grief, already!! I’m here for a quick visit, before eating a biscuit with strawberry jam (I’ll just bet they’re as hazardous as those donuts, eh?). Anyhoo–I wanted to say that I love and agree with the words of your 1 Thes verse–let’s be grateful and joyful, Amen!! God bless you–love, sis Caddo

    1. Yummy strawberry jam…I’m sure the sugar in it isn’t good for us, but oh, those strawberries have to be nutritious. It’s okay that you haven’t visited since February. I haven’t had time to make my usual rounds of blog reading either lately, including yours, — all of these family weddings are keeping me hopping! When things calm down, I’ll be visiting you more regularly! God bless you too!

  8. I’ve had my children out of the nest for quite a few years, but they all live and work here on our ‘ROCK’ island state. I am blessed to see 3 children and spouses and 7 grandchildren drop in during the week. Sometimes we help with pick up and afternoon or weekend care, enjoy some of their sports activities, yet always glad that God has blessed them with good homes they can return to, most of all that they all know the Lord! You have a very good blog site!
