This girl

blogAustralian travelerThis girl.

This girl I once carried in the hidden space inside my own body.

This girl made me a mother for the very first time, just a few minutes before Mother’s Day.

This girl, who seemed a shy, quiet child, possessed an adventurous spirit inside that reserved façade just waiting to soar.

This girl discovered her wanderlust in high school on her first adventure to France.

This girl journeyed by herself to Africa, much to the worry of her parents.

This girl’s faith in God and her caring soul prodded her to minister to the unfortunate in Honduras more times than I can count.

This girl captured the heart of another adventurer and married him.

This girl, whose dream it has been to travel the world and see new sights, pursues that dream alongside her husband.

This girl experienced mountain top lifetime thrills at Mt. Kilimanjaro’s summit and at Peru’s Machu Picchu.

This girl has visited more countries on this earth than I can remember and has stepped foot on every continent except Asia and Antarctica.

This girl is my beloved oldest daughter.

This girl is celebrating a birthday.

And this girl amazes me.

“Actually, the best gift you could have given her was a lifetime of adventures.” ~ Lewis Carroll

Mama of this empty nest, I’m content to live a quiet, country life with my husband of 40+ years and to view gorgeous sunsets off our own back yard deck. Mama to three adults and Nana to adorable grandchildren, my empty nest fills up again with noise and laughter when they all return 'home'. A former English teacher, reporter/editor, education director for a non-profit organization, and stay at home mom, I retired after a season of substitute teaching at a private academy. Now I enjoy time spent with my grandchildren and family and writing words that seem to pour out of my soul or wandering around the countryside with my camera. Foremost, my faith sustains me as I meander through the empty nest stage of life. My favorite scripture is 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18: “Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”

  1. She is an amazing woman and a blessing to our family, as well. Our son searched for quite a while for his one and only. He was told by me that God would send her to him at the right time and just be patient cause we did not know the circumstances by which he would meet her. Wouldn’t you know, they met on a mission trip! They enjoy their travels together and what a blessing she is to my son. Thank you for giving her life and teaching her to value it every moment.

    1. They are such a good match and a good example of waiting for the person God has for you to be your life’s partner. I can say the very same thing back to you about your son; he is such a blessing to our daughter and us! You surely raised him right! 🙂

  2. Happiest of birthdays to your lovely daughter. What a wonderful tribute to her and to her many achievements. Isn’t it just so wonderful to be the mom to a grown up ? I love who our sons have become.
